Whiplash Injuries

What are Whiplash Injuries?

Whiplash Injuries are very similar to a neck strain.  It is as a result of when your head is forced to fall forward and backward.  That sudden movement causes the muscles in your neck to stretch and often tear.  The most common cause from a car accident is when you are hit from behind. The more sudden and forceful the impact is, the more damage to the tissues of the body and neck.

What are the symptoms?

The symptoms of whiplash or injury to the neck can appear right away or they can take a few days to surface. The pain can be very intense and usually includes headaches, pain moving your head from side to side or forward and backward, and your neck muscles may seem knotted or stiff.  These symptoms can make it difficult to return to work, school or any or your normal daily activities.

Did you know...

A recent study compared the quality of life for people that sustained whiplash injuries from before their accidents to 5 years after a car accident.  The results found a deteriorated quality of life for people who sustained a WAD 2 injury which includes neck pain and decreased range of motion and tenderness.

What should you do next?

The best thing to do is to see your family doctor or visit a walk-in clinic. Along with a physical exam and some imaging tests such as an X-ray or MRI, your doctor will be able to diagnose you and let you know what your next steps should be for recovery.
